Now the research has taken her to Sweden and Stockholm has become her new home for the next couple of years. They have gone for an antique look of mis-matched furniture with wooden framed sofas and chairs, complemented an array of oil paintings on the walls. Despite the coffee being available for self-service in the middle of the dining room…no!
I climbed a staircase and ended up in a corridor leading to a delicious selection of cakes and pastries.
So why have we included the review? One of the most photographed places of Stockholm. I don’t like the interior at all and though sitting on the terrace might be a pleasant experience, there are other places with better service.
Sjöcaféet – This café with outdoor seating offers an amazing view of the Stockholm’s waterfront boulevard.
This café is situated in a beautiful historical building in the central square of the Old Town. Fika is not just about having coffee, it’s more of a social concept to meet with friends over a cup of coffee, accompanied by a pastry. Their effort to provide a high-quality service is visible in many aspects – pleasant décor, freshly baked bread, beautiful cakes, gluten-free options, a dog-friendly environment and suspended coffee and soup.

A few more cafés worth mentioning
Kaffekoppen – It’s one of the well-known tourist attractions, mentioned in Lonely Planet’s guide to Stockholm.
And cafés in Stockholm are a must – not least to experience Fika …

2017 UPDATE: VÄXT CAFE HAS NOW CLOSED but you can check out these other great places to eat in Stockholm!
At first glance, this cafe seems like it is just another takeaway eatery in Stockholm (yawn!) but… if you dare to let your tastebuds loose amongst this sea of flavour …

Café 60 – late night café in Stockholm
As part of Stockholm on a Shoestring, we think it is only right to include reviews of some of the more well-known cafés in Stockholm – some of which are on more of a shoestring budget than others.
We have already reviewed some favourites among Stockholmers including:

Sturekatten
We visited Sturekatten as it had been recommended to us by several Stockholmers, and yes, it was clear that many many Stockholmers do frequent it – despite its two dining rooms, we were lucky to find a table!
Sturekatten is hidden away from the street – you have to go …

Top Tips for Stockholm Tourists
Order Swedish filter coffee (Brygg kaffe)
In Sweden, and particularly in touristy areas such as Gamla Stan, it is often cheaper to order a standard Swedish filter coffee (often called Brygg kaffe) than a latté or anything you might normally order in your generic coffee chain.
Well, Stockholm on a Shoestring is about finding the best value places to eat but it’s also about letting you know what you’re in for. A few minutes later, our food did arrive but it was just…really bad!
My lasagne was cold in the middle and instead of a bechamel sauce, the topping consisted of giant slices of mozzarella – which was a shame as I have had plenty of good lasagnes in Stockholm.
…So that was the food…
…But what most people rave about here is the decor.
All in the same great city!
Stockholm’s range of world cuisine seems to be continually expanding.
We’ve mentioned before that you should definitely seek out sushi in Stockholm as a lunch option – especially if you want to dine out on a budget. Maybe we went on a bad day! When I first came there, I was worried that I entered somebody’s house.
We waited…and we waited…and after 25 minutes I had to go and ask where our food was. It’s a park café located in Kungsträdgården (the King’s Garden) and aside from good coffee it also offers a beautiful view of the city centre. Highly recommended!

Tehuset Kungsträdgården
Tehuset Kungsträdgården is my favourite café during the summer.
The furniture and paintings I liked…but the walls could do with a new lick of paint and the window frames are in desperate need of some attention with paint coming away from the frames – easy things to fix really and it would just give it that look of intentional decor, rather than that ‘I just went to the second-hand store and bought everything I could find for cheap’ look!
On this occasion, we weren’t overly impressed.
However, it’s not located in such a beautiful old house and it’s only one floor.
Under Kastanjen
In one of the narrow streets of Stockholm’s Old Town grows a chestnut tree. The pastries and cakes are supplied by a small bakery and are delicious (at least the strawberry Swiss roll that I tried was).
My first impression was so good that when I was in the area (the Odenplan Square) later that week I just had to visit Café Pascal again.
